A Non Partisan Response - How Unique!

Liberal Finance Critic, John McCallum was interviewed on the CBC news yesterday just after the announcement of our first trade deficit since 1976. To his credit Mr. McCallum correctly identified the deep slump in both the value and demand for our commodities coupled with the economic woes of our largest trading partner as the reasons for this reversal of fortunes. He stressed that, while he does not hesitate to criticise the Harper government for its shortcomings, that government could not be faulted for this piece of very disturbing news. How refreshing for one of our senior politicians to recognise that governments of all stripes cannot be held accountable for events that are completely beyond their control. There are all too many valid examples of the carnage the Conservatives have visited on our economy – there is no need to lay this one at their feet. Conservative acolytes like my friend Dorsal are overly sensitive to criticism only because they sense that Canadians have lost faith in the quality of fiscal governance this government has delivered since gaining power. It's great to see our elected representatives focussing on what's best for the electorate in a time of need, particularly when both of the major parties are struggling to gain voter recognition.
Hopefully this BLOG will carry the same thread of co-operation as our disparate views are shared.
